Customary-Based Coastal Conservation: The Responsibility of Indigenous Law Communities in Dealing with Mining Company Activities

Introduction: The conservation of Indonesia's coastal environment is highly dependent on the role of customary law communities that uphold local wisdom.
Purposes of the Research: This study aims to analyze the implementation and role of the customary law community of Negeri Haya in preserving the coastal environment through the practice of Sasi in response to the mining activities of Waragonda Minerals Pratama Ltd. (WMP Ltd.).
Methods of the Research: Using normative research methods with legislative and conceptual approaches.
Findings of the Research: The results of this study found that Sasi practices are an effective customary law-based conservation system in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems. However, the case of WMP Ltd. shows the failure of indigenous peoples' participation in the licensing process and the disregard for customary norms, which leads to the enforcement of Sasi. These findings confirm the importance of stronger legal recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and their participation in the management of coastal environments to achieve sustainable development.
